Pokedex Entry

Poliophthalmus spiralis, commonly known as Poliwag, is an aquatic amphibian species characterized by its thin, flexible skin that reveals a spiral pattern of internal organs. This transparency is a result of evolutionary adaptations that serve both thermoregulation and camouflage in aquatic environments. Poliwag is primarily found in freshwater habitats such as rivers and ponds, where it demonstrates remarkable swimming abilities, relying on its newly developed limbs for propulsion rather than terrestrial locomotion. The direction of the spiral on its belly varies geographically, likely influenced by local environmental conditions, which has led to distinct regional populations. Poliwag feeds on small aquatic invertebrates and algae, using its suction-cup-like lips to cling to rocks in fast-flowing waters. During the breeding season, these amphibians are observed making short excursions onto land, although they quickly return to the water to avoid predators. Their thin skin, while a vulnerability, also allows for efficient respiration, enhancing their survival in diverse aquatic ecosystems.
